Bridges of Light
48 x 48 Oil on canvas
(private collection)
On a typical L.A. morning, despite all of the congestion and activity just above its banks, our Los Angeles River continues to make peace, as best it can, with decades worth of impositions that we have made on it.

Windflowers II
12 x 24 Oil on canvas
As twilight comes to the Morongo Valley near Palm Springs hundreds of giant windmills are busy at work harvesting all of the wind (and smog) that blows easterly through the Patrero Pass that is used by the Los Angeles' main link to the Southern half of the U.S.

Road Repair

A small study of a scene that those who drive in the harbor area are too familiar with.

The Fourth Street Bridge in East LA is perhaps one of the best example of Gothic Revival among the river's historic bridges. This bridge, when it was originally constructed, was a vision of the future of Los Angeles. As viewed through the structure of power grid supports, it spans a valley of concrete, shadows, and what is left of the once wild L. A. River. The river almost seems like one of the homeless people who live at its banks, hoping for a token of love to sustain it for another day.

Hotwheels II

As the evening starts to descend on a January rush-hour in Los Angeles, the freeways are all aglow in white and red.

LA Haze
12 x 16 Oil on linen
(private collection)
A hazy afternoon sun reflected through the tall buildings of downtown Los Angeles. They appeared and disappeared in the atmosphere. Bridges and buildings seemed to move in the light along with their deep windows.
I thought of all the windows, all the people, and all the eyes viewing the innumerable scenes of Los Angeles, and interconnected into this singular Landscape.
L.A. Haze was selected to be part of the 100th Annual Gold Medal Exhibit of the California Art Club and displayed at the Pasadena Museum of Art.

Just passing under the 4th street bridge, Amtrak's Southwest Chief is only a few minutes into its 2265 mile journey back home to Chicago. With a quick stop at Fullerton and Riverside, it will soon be heading up Cajon Pass as the sun sets. Tomorrow's sunrise will find it nearing Gallup, NM, almost a world apart from the one we are just departing from.

Metropolis-II (study)

Like a huge labyrinth, the East L.A. Interchange weaves its way toward the City

Woven Concrete
12 x 9 Oil on linen
Whenever I have the opportunity to fly into LAX, I am mesmerized by the city, and especially by the patterns and textures created by the freeways. Here, in the typical Southern California haze, is a view from above all of the detail that those drivers below are dealing with.
Woven Concrete was selected by the California Art Club to be in their 107th Gold Medal Exhibition currently in progress in the Main Gallery of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles

L.A. River Crossing
8 x 16 Oil on linen
Los Angeles' Sixth Street Viaduct, a.k.a the Whittier Bridge was built over the L.A. River is Southeast Los Angeles in 1932. Here, this unsung workhorse of L.A.'s East Side takes a much-needed rest on a lazy, hazy Sunday morning.

Yellow Tower

The old movie theater in downtown Long Beach is preserved here on a quiet Sunday morning.Â
